That’s why the current educational system doesn’t work.

There was a time when the education system was designed to suit the industrial revolution’s economic demands. But today, it appears that with the present global economic situation, the current educational system is unable to match the needs of our hyper-connected society; which according to Scott Clayton, is a culture that is constantly evolving.

In this article, we’ll be examining why the current education system does not work. We’ll start by looking at the shortcomings of the education system, issues with the student debt crisis, and the need for a change. Let’s get started.

Pitfalls In The Current Education System

One of the foremost shortcomings of the current education system is the lack of sufficient parental involvement. Children are at emotional-academic imbalance risk due to a lack of parental involvement in academics due to the demands of employment and an over-dependence on schools.

Another shortfall is the constantly decreasing school financing. On average, 47 percent of school money comes from state governments, 43 percent from local governments, and ten percent from the federal government. According to Liz Willen report for The Hechinger, states have reduced spending over the years, resulting in a deficit in school funding in the United State.

Overcrowding is another pitfall as schools are usually overcrowded as a result of rising student populations, teacher shortages, and budget cuts. There’s also the issue of inequality. In truth, the educational system in the United States is one of the most unequal in the industrialized world, with children getting learning chances based on their social status or class.

There is a scarcity of innovative teacher education. Teachers need to be better trained to meet the needs of a specific student, appreciate the importance of remote learning, and speak up to support classroom change.

Another glaring pitfall in the education system is the student debt crisis and lack of access to a student loan for minorities. Over the last few decades, student debt has risen dramatically. According to the Federal Reserve, Americans owed $1.73 trillion in student loans in the second quarter of 2021. Despite a lengthy freeze on federal student loan interest rates and the Biden Administration’s removal of billions of federally held student loans, the record-breaking figure represents a three percent rise over the second quarter of 2020.

According to a report issued Monday by the Institute for College Access & Success, community schools throughout the country that do not provide access to federal student loans are jeopardizing nearly one million students who may turn to riskier types of lending to support their education. According to a survey in Jing Li’s report, African-American, Latino, and Native American community college students are more likely than white students to attend colleges that do not participate in the federal student loan program, with more than one-fifth of community college students in a handful of states, having no access to federal loans.

The Need For Change Has Never Been So Pressing

Finland, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Russia, Norway, the United Kingdom, Israel, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and China are some of the countries with better education systems than the US. Americans have never asked so much of the education system as they are doing now.

Change is more imperative now than ever because the future Americans want to achieve necessitates it. Workplaces and civic participation are changing at an unprecedented rate. Automation, artificial intelligence, and social media advancements are causing significant changes in our daily life. There’s a need for the education system to rise and take its place in contributing to the development of not just the youngsters, but the country at large.
